The nine circles of hell from Dante’s Inferno recreated in Lego by Mihai Mihu

I. LIMBO: A place of monotony, here the souls are punished to wander in restless existence while they moan helplessly in echoes between the ruins of a temple.

II. LUST: Surrounded by erotic representations, those overcome by lust are forced to watch and experience disgusting things, ultimately being condemned to drown in the menstrual river.

III. GLUTTONY: The circle itself is a living abomination, a hellish digestive system revealing horrific faces with mouths ready to devour the gluttons over and over for eternity.

IV. GREED: This pompous place is reserved for the punishment of the greedy ones.

V. ANGER: In this depressing place the souls are trapped in the swamp, they can’t move and they cannot manifest their frustration which is making them even more angry.

VI. HERESY: The giant demon watches closely over his fire pit, dwarfing the damned that are dragging the new arrivals in the boiling lava. Those who committed the greatest sins against God are getting a special treatment inside the temple where they are doomed to burn for eternity in the scorching flames.

VII. VIOLENCE: A place of intense torture where the horrific screams of the damned are eternally accompanied by the hellish beats of drums.

VIII. FRAUD: In Fraud the Demons enjoy altering the shape of souls, this is how they feed.

IX. TREACHERY: Lucifer lies here chained by the Angelic Seal which keeps him captive in the frozen environment.

I got to #3 and screamed until the scroll bar worked faster.

These are really cool and imaginative, but it’s worth pointing out that this is inspired by the Inferno, not an actual recreation of the circles/bolgie. Many of these are not at all what Dante wrote.

So, you know, before you think that Dante wrote the Circle of Lust to be about staring at dicks and vaginas until you fall into a pool of menstrual blood (seriously???), it wasn’t. Being blown around by a violent storm that represents the way that lust forces people to behave needlessly and aimlessly is just a little less cool to show off in Lego form.

Nintendo’s announcement (and YouTube’s acquiescence) is a disaster. It hurts Nintendo, and it hurts the independent creators who through their Let’s Play videos create a unique and valuable experience of a game.

I completely agree. Nintendo is being greedy, stupid, and shortsighted. Nintendo makes money by making great games and systems to play them. YouTube makes money by selling advertising and nurturing an environment where creators can share their creations.

Nintendo is, surprisingly, grabbing a small amount of money (relative to their earnings) and alienating countless customers.

YouTube is, unsurprisingly, being cowardly and not supporting the content creators who have made it worth billions. YouTube is, once again, on the wrong side of an issue with regard to its content creators.

This was a fun one to do.

It’s Zelda! Though her design is half based on Tetra and half based on Aaron Diaz’s Zelda design from his Clockwork Empire concept.

Which for those who don’t know is a reimagining of LoZ with Zelda as the protagonist. It’s a pretty cool idea but more importantly her tunic is purple!

Purple.

I really, really love purple.

Plus I’ve always wanted to play as Zelda so bam! Now I can.

Her alt outfit (at the bottom) is, of course, based entirely on Tetra’s outfit =]

Anyway, only one more alternate design to go and then I’ll put up a download link for them all.

This is SO GREAT, you guys. I’m glad my Clockwork Empire thing has inspired so many skilled folks to make amazing things!

There are two areas where the USA is way out in front of the rest of the world: war and prison. The technology of killing is the main investment of US national energy, and of course the semi-public semi-private incarceration economy is flourishing while schools and roads crumble. In many other quality-of-life terms — housing, healthcare, public transportation, public access to technology, mental health support, support for people with disabilities, childcare, primary education, maternity support, social safety net — I think a lot of US Americans personally know that things are not exactly rosy but see no options for fixing it.

Nicola Samori (b. 1977). Italian.

Neo-Baroque??

Nicola Samori is fucking incredible. He works out of Italy, and he’s managed to nail the style of the Old Masters: his exhibitions contain everything from beautiful Baroque saints to Flemish still lifes — all painted now, in the modern era, in his studio. And that would be amazing in and of itself, but his work is so much more than simple reproduction. See, once he’s finished with a painting, or once he’s adapted one that’s been previously created, he takes a scalpel to it, a spatula, or a square of sandpaper, and begins to peel it apart. He flays painted skin right off his subjects’ bones.

Sometimes the “destruction” of the images asks the audience to think about what, exactly, the painting communicates when it’s whole. Other times it adds a strange level of corporeality to religious works, or gives portraits a darkly spiritual dimention they never had before.

He’s said in interviews that he views the layers of paint on the canvas as analogous to the muscle and tissue of the human body, and that by wearing it away, he changes the identity of the paintings themselves.

Dark and sometimes chilling as it is, I think his work is genuinely brilliant, and he’s one of my favorite living artists.
